Readwise Reader, Matter and Instapaper are good apps. But they all share one architecture: if there's AI, it's theirs — their model, their key, priced into your subscription. Slab Reader inverts that, and the price shows it.
The short version
- Readwise Reader is the power-user highlights hub: read-later, RSS, newsletter capture, exports to Obsidian and Notion, and a built-in AI (“Ghostreader”). At the time of writing it runs $9.99/month on annual billing with no free tier.
- Matter is the beautiful reader with excellent text-to-speech, at a similar annual price. Same closed AI loop.
- Instapaper is the original read-later — simple, reliable, no AI at all.
- Slab Reader is pencil-first and PDF-native, runs £1.99–£4.99/month, and has no built-in AI on purpose: you connect the Claude, ChatGPT or Perplexity account you already pay for, and it reads and replies to your highlights directly.

Why the price gap is structural
Readwise and Matter resell AI: every Ghostreader query runs on API credits they buy, so their subscription has to carry that cost — and their AI is whatever model they wired in. Slab Reader doesn't buy AI at all. You bring the assistant you already have, so the AI is always the best model you have access to, its costs are already paid, and the app can charge for what it actually provides: storage, sync and the annotation layer. That's how £1.99 works without a catch.
When you should stay where you are
Honest bit. If your reading is mostly RSS feeds and newsletters, Readwise Reader is built for exactly that and Slab Reader isn't trying to be. If text-to-speech is how you consume articles, Matter is the best in class and we don't have it. And if you don't use an AI assistant at all, half of Slab Reader's point is lost on you — Instapaper is cheaper than most and does read-later with no fuss.
When to switch
If you read documents — papers, contracts, reports — with a pencil in hand, and you already pay for Claude, ChatGPT or Perplexity, the calculation is simple: Slab Reader is the only one where your own assistant can read every mark you make and answer under it. That workflow doesn't exist elsewhere at any price — and here it's the cheapest option on the table.
